Summer’s over and the smell of football is in the air.

September 6th, 2010 by cameron

What a summer for Seattle sports!  Have I missed out on the great accomplishments or what?

Let’s see, M’s are in last again.  UW was over hyped in it’s loss to BYU over the weekend.  The Seahawks seem to be cutting the entire roster.  I’ll include WSU since there are some die hard Cougs out there.  Their game doesn’t even need to be mentioned.

Look closer and it’s not all doom and gloom in the great northwest.

The Storm is back in the WNBA Finals.  They haven’t been there since 2004 when they won it all.  What about the little league team from Auburn one win from the US Championship?  What a great run that was.

Back to the Mariners for a quick second since that’s all the time they really deserve.  In another season of forgetfulness, Felix Hernandez has turned in a string of starts to remember.  After his wins pushed him to 11-10 today, he’s 4-1 in his last 6 starts with a video game/softball ERA of 0.20.  Bananas!  Too bad that’s all we can cheer for.

Seahawks, well, what expectations can one truly have?  Preseason was a typically boring one as it is every year no matter the expectations.  We’ll see after next week’s game against the 49er’s.  I have absolutely no idea what to expect.  It’s pretty bad when you have low or no expectations.  Again, a day in the life of a Seattle sports fan.

Now to the Huskies, ah, the Huskies.  I wasn’t too surprised we lost a game every optimistic fan practically had in the bag – WE HAVEN’T WON A DAMN ROAD GAME IN TWO YEARS!  I’m going to stick to my guns and predict a 2-2 start.  We’ll win the next two against Syracuse and Nebraska – both games are at home – and lose against USC.  I love the story and good feeling we all get when we think of Locker-mania, but honestly, I can’t wait for the guy to move on to the pros.  This team and all it’s hype revolves around one player.  Too bad he can’t win the game by himself.  I think, no, I know we’ll be better once the Locker era comes to an end.  This season is not at all a loss after one disappointing game, but if the coaches keep calling a game like that, we’re in for another typical Seattle season.  I mean can we quit with the shotgun QB draw already?  Why not roll Locker out and then let him run if his progressions are covered?  We’ll see if I change my tune next week.

Alright, I’m back and as ready as ever.  Let’s go Seattle fans.  We have the Storm on the way to winning their second title, which they will.  The start of any season reeks of optimism.  We’ll see how long that lasts with the Huskies and Hawks.  You gotta love football season.  I sure do.

There is a winner in Seattle!

Okay, it’s not a major sport, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as entertaining.  The UW Softball team is out to defend their NCAA Title from last season.  They hit a minor bump Thursday night when they were surprisingly hammered by Oklahoma in the opening game of the Super Regionals.  Danielle Lawrie, above, recovered from a rare loss (5 IP, 5 ER) by tossing 14 scoreless innings Friday night giving up seven hits and striking out a combined 27 batters in back-to-back victories.  Softball differs from baseball in that they play seven innings instead of nine – if you didn’t know.

The ladies are now off to Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series which starts play Thursday June 3rd.  Tune in to ESPN or ESPN2 to watch some exciting game play which I guarantee will feature numerous pitching gems (there always are in softball).

Here’s to bringing home a rare championship to our beautiful city.  Good luck!

Terrence Jones is a class act. So is Calipari.

May 21st, 2010 by cameron

Now that I’ve got you’re attention, I really think this whole debacle was a complete waste of time.  If we already knew Calipari was a “sleazebag”, should this outcome really come as a surprise?  I wrote a month ago that Jones was going to Kentucky.  His decision made sense.  Look at the publicity John Wall has been receiving.  Granted he (and Evan Turner) were by far the best players in college this year, but it still brings Kentucky into light.  You want recognition, you go to the “name brand” schools.  This is exactly what Jones is doing.

The only issue I have is the press conference.  Why even hold one if you were still undecided?  I think verbal commitments should be done away with since recruits change their minds all the time.  Hold them accountable and make them sign by a certain date.  Once you sign, you can’t turn back.  Honor your commitment.  Of course this is a pipe dream as hype is the biggest thing in sports today.

On the whole Calipari thing, just let it go.  Who cares?  Let’s deal with what we have and move on.  We have a great coach in Romar and a solid team returning everyone but Pondexter.  This whole ordeal will blow over midway through next season.  Although, it would be interesting if somehow UW and Kentucky met in the tourney.  Imagine that.

I’m just glad this is over. Now what if Calipari leaves and Jones changes his mind?  Would he choose UW?  Only time will tell.

*UPDATE*

Both Washington and Kentucky are in the EA Sports Maui Invitational to begin the 2010 season, so they very well could meet up sooner than we expect.  Oh joy.

M’s and Your Unrealistic Expectations

May 8th, 2010 by cameron

Did you really think we would be better than this?  Remember back a few months when Z signed Cliff Lee and everybody thought we were going to be contenders after the signing?  This, after knowing we had issues with not having a decent hitting lineup.  Decent, at this point, is beyond a stretch.  Have you seen these guys hit?  Or lack thereof.  You and I could go out there and do no worse.  Really.

Ichiro is still doing his thing while Figgins, though not hitting well at .198, is still getting on base drawing walks (.333 OBP, 22 BB, .198 avg thru May 7).  Add Gutierrez to the mix and an illusion of a solid three appears.  Except that’s all there is, a solid three.  The rest of the lineup is literally hitting challenged batting a boggling .198.  198!  We have a total of 10 homers!  There are four players that have equal to or more than this.

Back to your expectations.  Did you think by signing a top tier pitcher (for one year) was going to help us?  It may help us in the long term if we extend his contract or trade him for prospects by the deadline.  In the immediate future though, it doesn’t appear we’re winning anything.  True, we’re in a favorable division, but if we can’t score runs we ain’t winning!  I was listening to KJR the other day and Softy interviewed Jeff Nelson and Nelly mentioned moving Ichiro to third in the lineup.  Again, what the hell would this do?  We’d still need another bat to hit.  Get off the damn Ichiro bashing bandwagon and come to terms that the other dozen or so guys aren’t doing what they’re supposed to.  You can fail 7 out of 10 times and be successful.  This is baseball for crying out loud where batting .300, or being successful 3 out of 10 times IS SUCCESSFUL!

What about King Felix?  You know our number one starter – 7 starts, 2-3, 4.20 ERA – hardly living up to his expectations.  This goes back to the Ichiro thing.  If another Mariner fan trashes this guy, I swear I’m going to go Ape crap on somebody.  This is the only guy for the past nine years that models consistency on this team, yet time after time fans question his attitude and unfairly label him a “prima donna”.  If he is, I wish we had a clubhouse full of them, at least they would be doing their job which would at least guarantee victories.  I swear fans are idiots sometimes (all the time, I’m being generous when I say sometimes).

Are we going to turn it around and win the division?  It could happen.  I could win the lottery too.  Good thing winning the division is easier to attain even though it seems a far cry at this point.  Manage your expectations correctly and reality will be easier to cope with.

Stay thirsty my friends.

OKC is not the Sonics!

May 4th, 2010 by cameron

People, this is not our team!  Root for them at your own risk.  We’re not obligated to root for these guys even though they were our team.  They’re not.  Take a look at the picture above – what does it say across the chest?  Not Seattle.  Not Supersonics.  Not Sonics.  It says Oklahoma City.

There is no way I will ever root for this team.  Nothing against the players (they’ll leave eventually to free agency anyway), it’s the whole principal of being stolen.  As a matter of fact, I think our city leaders gave them away.  Our liberals of this city could care less – “we need more money for our schools, dogs or whatever…” – have you seen some of the schools?  Better yet, did you even attend a Seattle public school?  Thought not.  Some people don’t understand the concept of sports and what it brings to the community.  I’m not going to explain it because if you haven’t gotten it by now, you never will.

The Thunder has leaped over my most disliked team in basketball, the Lakers.  Leaped them by miles.  I’m glad LA booted these guys out in the first round.  If you’re a true Sonic fan, there is no way shape or form you should be rooting for these guys.  If you are, consider yourself a bandwagon fan my friend.

Draft an A+?

May 4th, 2010 by cameron

The smoke’s cleared and the 2010 NFL Draft is behind us.  A couple outlets, ESPN and Yahoo Sports to name a few, have us with A and A+ respectively.  I’m never one to say anything positive on a draft because we won’t ultimately know until two to three years from now.   On paper we may get high grades, but what happens if none of these guys pan out, say because of injuries?  Too early to tell.  Are we optimistic?  Why wouldn’t we be, have you seen the last two seasons?  There is only one way to go and that’s up brother.  I feel we did what we were supposed to do in the first round.  I liked the Tate pick up.  I dislike the heck outta Notre Dame (and was actually glad to see Clausen drop), but Tate’s talent seems special.  Again, only time will tell.

On to other draft news.  We had a couple Dawgs taken in the third round.  Congrats to Te’o-Nesheim and Butler.  Make us alum proud, or don’t we’ll still wish you well either way – as long as you don’t pull any off field/bad choices type of crap that’s been lingering.   See that one quarterback from Pittsburgh.

I also have a bone to pick with certain fans that thought it was a bad idea for Locker to stay.  I’ll keep it short and simple, see Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy.  Enough said on that.

2010 Seahawks schedule released

April 20th, 2010 by cameron

The schedule was released literally minutes ago.  Not a bad schedule.  We’re back in the AFC West again with games against all AFC West teams – @ Denver 9/19, San Diego 9/26, @ Oakland 10/31 and Kansas City 11/28.  Next on the docket, the draft in two days.  Details to follow.  Click here for the 2010 full schedule.

It’s Baseball Season Boys and Girls; and more…

April 16th, 2010 by cameron

Are you ready for the greatest offense ever? Ha, got ya.  We’re batting a cool .231.  Whoo hoo!  They’ve settled down a bit and started scoring some runs thank goodness.  Just remember, it’s not how you start but how you finish.  I know you’ve heard it before, but with this division we just may sneak into the playoffs.   It’s not even two weeks into the season so I really have nothing to else on this long (sometimes too long) of a season.  On a side note, Ichiro haters, can you guys put it to bed?

Is Terrence Jones going to be a Dawg?  Great question.  I doubt it though.  After Kentucky signed point guard Brandon Knight and the departure of talented one and done’s John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, I think he’ll sign with Kentucky even though Enes Kanter is going there as well.  Of course I want him to sign with us especially with the transfer of Elston Turner. Back to Kanter, did you see this kid in the Nike Hoop Summit game?  He only broke Dirk Nowitzki’s scoring record.  Can you imagine if he stuck it out and remained with UW?  Oh man.  Oh well, heard the kid has eligibility issues anyway – although he’s going to a coach that works the system well.

News on the Hawks – nope, nothing to say until the draft in a week.  Tune in then.

Greatness?

April 6th, 2010 by cameron

Remember 2008?

The worst year ever.

This is what we’re used to here in this beautiful city of ours.  We define mediocrity when it comes to regional athletics.  Our fans, well that’s a different story.  Continuing to root for the type of teams showcased year to year is exhausting, but we still cheer and still love and support them with all our heart (imagine if we as a collective whole could do this in relationships?).  It’s easy to root for a winner – think Yankees, Lakers, Celtics, Patriots, etc. – all we have is an NBA championship from over three decades ago from a team no longer here, a split national championship from the ‘91 Huskies, a Storm WNBA title and a recent Softball national title from our lady Huskies.  That’s it.

It pains me when our local media continues to focus on the “Mariners’ dream season from 1995″.  We need to let that go.  I understand the significance, but really?  The Hawks came oh so close in 2005.  Oh so close.  I remember stomping like a child to my room after that loss so frustrated I almost cried.  I was 28 years old and my intuition told me we weren’t going to win, but just this one time please be wrong.  My fellow Seahawk fans please stop complaining about the refs.  We have to let that go as well.  We’re so used to losing its sad.  But there is something positive from this.

Our passion.

We have the greatest fans simply because we show so much love for perennial losers.  We don’t have tons of bandwagon fans like the Cowboys, Lakers, Yankees or whoever is the hot team of the year.  We define fanatic loyalty.  Loyal to teams that are winning challenged – which sometime transpires to confused fans.  Can you believe we have fans that bash Ichiro for no apparent reason other than their questionable logic?  They congratulate the team when we win and blame Ichiro when we lose.  That’s a topic for another day.

There is a glimmer of light.  Lorenzo Romar.  Steve Sarkisian.  Jake Locker.  Jack Zduriencik.  Even Pete Carroll.  Names that in the short term make us smile for the time being.  A flicker at the end of the tunnel.  We hope and pray it won’t continue on the path we’ve been on.  The yellow brick road to Loserville.  A place we know all too well.  It’s like celebrating your little one graduating from kindergarten, elementary or middle school.  We’re accepting the celebration of mediocrity.  You’re supposed to pass kindergarten, elementary and middle school.  Let’s stop celebrating the ‘95 Mariners along with the memory of the ‘05 Hawks.  We need to raise our level of expectations.  Demand greatness.  This is not little league where you tell your kid, “try your best and it’ll be alright.”  If you’re best isn’t good enough, see that thing that swings open, usher yourself out of it and good luck.  This is beyond that.

We need a championship accord, think a fist pumping “Victory!” from Johnny Drama in “Entourage”.  Only this needs to be real.

If you’re content with mediocrity, then you my friend can never complain.  Expect greatness.  Visualize a championship.  This is the attitude our city and fans need to pass on to our teams.

No more losing.  Please?
