I recently had a fever and the only cure was Cheez Wiz! So where did I go? Philadelphia Fevre in the Central District, of course! I’ve driven by this establishment dozens of times and have heard many, albeit artery-clogging, good things, but it’s taken the better part of a decade for me to actually step inside its doors.
To preface, I’ve never been to Philadelphia but am aware of the ongoing debate of whether or not the cheese of choice should be freshly cut and allowed to melt or smother it with Cheez Wiz, ala Pat’s vs. Geno’s. Well folks, Cheez Wiz won. The pretty lady behind the counter highly suggested this route as it’s more ‘authentic.’ As evident by the pictures above, I devoured the ‘authentic’ hell out of it, accompanied with some crinkle fries and washed it down with some grape soda. So unhealthy, I know, but the feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment was expressed through my ear-to-ear grin. Check this place out if you’re ever in the area and need a catalyst for a nap.
Next up, Tat’s Deli.

It’s back! Or should I say it’s here! Whatever the case, the bi-annual, month-long dining deal that is Dine around Seattle showcases some of the areas best dining establishments by offering a 3-course meal for just $30 (many offer lunch of $15). This is a great time to try to that new restaurant you’ve heard of or return to an old favorite. Barolo is on the list for me!

It was because of their album, Big Calm and the hit, The Sea (above video, via EFgamez), that I became familiar with this British trio back in college; but it’s their cover of Crystal Blue Persuasion that cemented my appreciation for the group. A classic example of “If it ain’t broke, then don’t try to fix it,” the Godfrey Brothers vainly tried to replace the smooth vocals of original vocalist Skye Edwards multiple times only to realize there’s nothing like the original. After an 8 year seperation, it’s come full circle with her return to Morcheeba. Catch them tonight at The Showbox at The Market! Perhaps I can suggest a nice restaurant to eat at before the show…

“Seattle’s dopest burger,” is their claim; certainly a bold one for being the new kid on the block. Dope Burger, located in the heart of Belltown, serves up a solid menu of staple and gourmet burgers, sides and shakes. They also have a full bar and are open until 1:30 am on the weekends!
I sampled the Dope Burger (American cheese, tomato, chopped onions, iceberg lettuce, pickles and dope sauce) with bacon, side order of hand cut fries, and an Oreo shake. The burger was as I imagined it to be – fresh and tasty. The bun was a little different, but still good. It had the look and taste of the end pieces of a loaf of bread.
Dope Burger is what I would envision Dick’s Drive-In to be to be if Dick’s were to focus on quality, and not quantity…..vice versa for Red Mill. That’s no slight to either establishment as I do think they serve a great burger in their own rights. As I’ve only tried one burger, I do plan on going back to give their Reuben and Sloppy Jane burgers a try, as well as the sweet potato fries and Nutter Butter shake.
So, does it live up to its name? Well, yes and no; it’s dope, but not Seattle’s dopest. I’m sure after you visit, you’ll tell yourself you’ve had doper. Is it worth checking out? Definitely.

Seattle, the radio broadcasting and Major League Baseball communities, lost an icon in the recent passing of our very own Dave Niehaus. As much as his voice and legacy lives on in the hearts of Mariner fans, it is a tough pill to swallow, especially considering that we won’t be hearing his play-by-play this season. To sooth the feelings of our loss, local Hip-Hop artist Macklemore rhymes a poignant tale of Dave and the many memories he’s given us. Thanks Dave. You’re one of a kind.

…I suggest you pay Broadway Shoe Repair a visit. Nestled within Broadway Market on Capitol Hill, they’ve given a few pairs of my shoes a second lease on life, sometimes third. The cobblers here are honest and charge a decent rate. If they can fix it on the spot, they’ll give it the attention it needs.

I curse you and I praise you; upset that it took me 3 hours to get home but thankful for getting Tuesday off. Stay safe and stay warm.
Gauging whether a certain style of barbecue is good or not can be quite subjective. Almost every damn state in the South has their own style! Some frown up on the liberal use of sauce, while others stick solely to the swine. Which ever way you like it, there is always someone who will tell you that it’s not ‘real’ barbecue.
To me, Kansas City-style is the best. Using a variety of meats, hickory wood, and tomato-based sauces, Kansas City does it right. ‘But we’re not in Kansas City!’ you say. Well, fear not! Stan’s Bar B-Q in Issaquah can help. Visiting on a recent Sunday morning, Stan’s was bustling with Chiefs fans cheering on their team and enjoying some good barbecue. I ordered the ‘Who’s your Daddy?’ platter (3 ribs, 1/2 lb beef brisket, 1/2 lb pork, 2 links, 2 sides), their most popular selection. After about 5 minutes, I understood why. It has something for everyone, and plenty of it.
Did I mention that they also have a build-your-own bloody mary station!? Well, they do. If you are ever in Issaquah and are looking for a good place to eat, you need to give Stan’s a try!

“Right now, the Mariners looking for the tie. They would take a fly ball, they would love a base hit into the gap and they could win it with Junior’s speed. The stretch… and the 0-1 pitch on the way to Edgar Martínez swung on and LINED DOWN THE LEFT FIELD LINE FOR A BASE HIT! HERE COMES JOEY, HERE IS JUNIOR TO THIRD BASE, THEY’RE GOING TO WAVE HIM IN! THE THROW TO THE PLATE WILL BE … LATE! THE MARINERS ARE GOING TO PLAY FOR THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP! I DON’T BELIEVE IT! IT JUST CONTINUES! MY, OH MY!”— Dave calling the winning hit by Edgar Martínez, which scored Joey Cora and Ken Griffey, Jr. to win the 1995 American League Division Series in the 5th and final game.
Awkwardly awesome? I’m sure it will be. If you’ve had the hankering to, let’s just say, watch a short film in a stranger’s home and sit in said stranger’s living room on said stranger’s couch, well there is a fest just for that! I have never been and honestly don’t know if I will go, but it’s unique and I’m sure you or someone you know might strangely want to go. Bonus if they serve food and refreshments!

In Japanese ‘genki’ literally means fine/well/healthy; an apt name for this kaiten (revolving conveyor belt) sushi chain. Utilizing the conveyor belt (double conveyor belt in some locations), Genki Sushi carts around quality plates of sashimi, nigirizushi (hand-formed), makizushi (rolled), and temakizushi (cone), as well as other staples such as gyoza, garlic chicken, or miso soup, swiftly to its customers. With three different color-coded plates to signify different price points ranging from just $1 – $2, Genki provides a relatively cheap option for a different type of fast food. The quality is good and service is friendly. I just wouldn’t go right after lunch or dinner as the conveyor belt runs pretty sparse right after the rush. Make sure to check out one of the locations during the upcoming $1-all sushi plate monthly special. Great time to take a cheap date!

Art connoisseur or not, citizens of Seattle should be excited at this exhibition. The highest profile exhibition to land in this city since King Tut in 1978, Picasso, Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, brings over 150 pieces from the enigmatic artist’s personal collection. With a recent renovation to the collections home museum in Paris, the Art Gods have cast their spotlight on Seattle and Seattle Art Museum (SAM). Already blessed with a vibrant local art scene, I hope Picasso thrusts Seattle into global prominence and further blessed with outstanding landmark exhibitions. I implore you to check this out! With artwork from every period of his career, it’s fascinating to see his evolution as an artist, especially his sculpture work.
Prior to taking in the exhibition, I tried out SAM Taste Restaurant for the first time during their Sunday brunch. I sampled the Fried Chicken & Waffle (stokesberry buttermilk chicken, bluebird grain waffle, sausage gravy, braised greens) as well as the Breakfast Pizza (fried duck egg, beecher’s blank slate, caramelized onions, smoked bacon, arugula); all washed down with a fantastic bloody mary. Pretty tasty dishes for being a museum restaurant, albeit a little pricey. All in good fun and well worth it, though!
